General facts about his life

  • Born in January 10, 1835
  • Born in an impoverished low-ranking samurai family of Okudaria Clan.
  • He was an author, writer, teacher, translator, entrepreneur, and political theorist.
  • Founder of Keio University.
  • In 1859, he traveled to San Francisco, California and started studying English.
  • He started a newspaper called JimShinpo in 1882, where his most contribution came from.
  • He was very influential and greatly encouraged learning from Western nations.
